How to Develop Good Sleep Habits

  • Go to sleep at the same time every night.
  • Try a light snack before sleeping. Foods high in tryptophan such as bananas may help.
  • Try and not take your worries to bed with you.
  • Regular exercise will help but not immediately before bedtime.
  • Take a warm bath. Water that is too hot will only stimulate you and keep you awake.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking, and large meals within four hours of bedtime.
  • Deep breathing exercises will speed your relaxation.
  • Reserve your bed for sleeping. Do not use your bed as a work place.
Keep noise levels down and the room dark.
  • Sleeping on your side and slightly elevated is recommended.
  • Keep your room at a comfortable temperature and make sure your bed is big enough for your needs.
  • Try and avoid long term use of medications to help you fall asleep. If you must be on them then only do this under the care of you physician.
  • Limit your naptime, set a regular bedtime and try not to go to bed too early.
  • Try and get your stress and anxiety under control before sleep.
