How to Develop Good Sleep Habits
- Go to sleep at the same time every night.
- Try a light snack before sleeping. Foods high in tryptophan such as bananas may help.
- Try and not take your worries to bed with you.
- Regular exercise will help but not immediately before bedtime.
- Take a warm bath. Water that is too hot will only stimulate you and keep you awake.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, smoking, and large meals within four hours of bedtime.
- Deep breathing exercises will speed your relaxation.
- Reserve your bed for sleeping. Do not use your bed as a work place.
Keep noise levels down and the room dark. - Sleeping on your side and slightly elevated is recommended.
- Keep your room at a comfortable temperature and make sure your bed is big enough for your needs.
- Try and avoid long term use of medications to help you fall asleep. If you must be on them then only do this under the care of you physician.
- Limit your naptime, set a regular bedtime and try not to go to bed too early.
- Try and get your stress and anxiety under control before sleep.
